Coach Resources

All successful coaches are works-in-progress. No coach is a finished product.

Below are some resources which are available to our SCCAL coaches looking to get better, gain an edge, or just refresh.

  1. The National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) offers “The Fundamentals of Coaching”, plus many sport-specific videos in almost every sport (e.g., football, volleyball, soccer, wrestling, lacrosse, baseball, etc.), plus videos on Sportsmanship, Title IX, Covid 19, NIL’s , Sports Nutrition, Concussions, Heat Illness Prevention, CPR, and much, much more. Many of the courses are offered for free or for a minimal fee. They also offer sports publications, and you can purchase the official rulebooks for every high school sport on their website. Go to https://www.nfhs.org/.
  2. The Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), through workshops and videos, offer coaches tools to become better coaches, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Double-Goal Coach. Double-Goal coaches understand that winning is important, but that teaching life lessons through sports is more important. Double-Goal coaches emphasize teamwork, respect, empathy, perseverance, good work ethics, and more. PCA info is available at https://positivecoach.org/.
  3. Started by former NFL player Joe Ehrmann, the InSideOut Initiative trains coaches to become transformational, not transactional. Transactional coaches are self-centered, they focus on W’s and L’s, and players are there to meet their needs. Transformational coaches are other-centered, and are motivated by social, moral, and ethical values. Transformational coaches provide our students purpose-based athletics, the purpose being character development and enriching human potential – kindness, empathy, moral courage, commitment, etc. A key question all coaches should ask themselves, “What kind of team have I molded?”……but the answer won’t be known for 20 years. Coach every athlete like they will become your son/daughter-in-law. Go to https://insideoutinitiative.org/.
  4. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) website offers links to many coaching resources, including Pursuing Victory With Honor, and other programs. Look under their “Coaches and Admin” sub-category at the top of their home page – https://www.cifstate.org/landing/index. The CCS website also offers a link to the CIF Coaching Education page, look under the School Resources section.
